Chess Master is a full implementation of standard chess, including castling, en passant, pawn promotion, check, checkmate and stalemate. Legal moves are highlighted when you pick up a piece, so you never have to guess whether something is allowed — useful whether you are learning the rules or simply moving quickly.

There are three ways to play. Against the bot you can choose a difficulty level, which changes how deeply it searches and how often it settles for a merely reasonable move instead of the best one. Local play puts two people on one device, taking turns on the same board. Online play generates a room code that you send to someone else, and the match connects as soon as they enter it.

Time controls are available for players who want the clock to be part of the challenge. A slower control leaves room to calculate properly; a fast one turns the game into pattern recognition and nerve, which is a completely different kind of chess.

Results from your games are tracked so you can see how you perform across bot, local and online play. No download or installation is needed, and a game can be started within seconds of opening the page.

• Control the centre early. Pieces placed in the middle of the board reach more squares. Opening with a central pawn and developing toward the centre is the most reliable start there is.
• Develop before you attack. Bringing out knights and bishops beats chasing an early capture. Attacks launched with one or two pieces almost always run out of support.
• Castle sooner than feels necessary. A king left in the centre becomes a target the moment the position opens up, and by then castling is often no longer possible.
• Check every capture before you take it. Most losses at club level are a piece taken without noticing what was defending it. One look at the target square prevents the majority of blunders.
• Trade when you are ahead. With extra material, simplifying into an endgame makes your advantage decisive. When behind, keep pieces on the board and complicate.
