The board glows, the ball leaves a trail, and the bot does not simply track the ball's current position.

Instead the bot predicts where the ball will actually arrive, including its bounces off the walls, and moves there. That makes it a real opponent rather than a target, and it is why simply hitting the ball back hard rarely works. Difficulty settings change how sharp that prediction is, so you can pick a level that is challenging without being hopeless.

The rally itself is where the game gets interesting. Where you strike the ball on your paddle changes its angle, so a well-placed edge hit sends it somewhere awkward instead of straight back. Long rallies also speed the ball up, which means every exchange gradually shifts from planning to pure reaction.

• Use the edges of your paddle. Hitting with the centre returns a predictable ball. Striking near the top or bottom changes the angle and is the main way to create difficult returns.
• Return to the middle after every hit. Sitting where you last made contact leaves half the board open. Recentring costs nothing and covers both replies.
• Watch the wall, not the ball. On angled shots the bounce point tells you where the ball is heading long before the ball gets there.
• Vary your returns against the bot. A predictable rhythm is exactly what a predicting opponent handles best. Mixing angles forces mistakes.
• Expect the speed-up. Long rallies accelerate. If you are winning an exchange, finishing it early is safer than trading another five hits.
